Simply asked, please explain to me which rule representation is most appropriate and what is the reason for it?
Color, clearly, I can see immediately where which error has occurred. It is intuitive, you can assign the colors. You don't need a legend, you don't need spatial awareness. You could combine the color with shape. But it is important to use color. 
 
 
Have you considered that several rules are active on the same activity or does that change your opinion?
Again, I would prefer the colors but you have to consider if you have a lot of rules that are violated if you can still distinguish them.  
 
 
Are there other representations that should be highlighted, both positive and negative?
I find the edges very confusing, you can't see anything at all, it's very slanted, you can't see anything. I find that really bad, at most I would show flags over the activities but not connect them, but that would then also only be a weakened form of the symbol representation. With the edges I went with the finger over the screen and got nowhere. 
 
With the scaling I see the problem that it will not work well in the spatial or 3D representation because objects that are farther away should automatically be displayed smaller. I feel that is no longer very intuitive you can not see it at a glance you have to compare them of course always on the same plane and then you see the differences. 
The colors either combined or pure. The texture I feel is not so good it rather mutes the colors and makes it less interesting and more complex. 
 
 
In the current representation the rules are represented by process, process instance, rule and rule instance. Should this be maintained/changed? how/why?
You could display the rule in such a way that the instances are optional or that you can show and hide the rule instances. You can see at the rule depending on the representation how often it occurs and that could already be enough information. 
 
 
A rule instance can be in one of the following states: evaluation, fulfilled, or violated which representation best manages to convey these states?
I may be color affine but I think colors are best here. If I didn't have colors I would choose shapes as they are very prominent. I would like the combination of shapes and colors, colors to represent the states and the shapes to represent that a rule is active. I always come to the colors, I have an immediate overview, I can count it at a glance, I don't have to check if I missed something, it's just there.  
 
In our work we have identified 2 main use cases (overview, detail). The first use case is to provide an overview for example When multiple instances of multiple processes are active at the same time and also various rules are active. Can you give me one or two representations that you consider suitable and what is the reason for this?
Colors I stay with the colors, because immediately in the first moment a good overview is created, one sees at a glance "here is everything red" or "oh there in back there is still something". I know immediately is panic necessary or not. With all other representations I must search.  
 
 
Unlike the previous use case, the second use case is to look in detail at very few processes/instances. Which of the representations are suitable in this case and for what reason?
I find symbols here to be a very eloquent way of representation - I can imagine it well. I don't need symbols in the overview but in the closer view definitely the best solution. 
 
 
This application can be run on desktop, VR and AR devices. Which device is the rule visualization best suited for and why?
It might be cool and I think it's great to put the glasses on, but I don't really see myself sitting in a completely virtual room in a VR setting. I don't have that much experience and I'm not that enthusiastic about it, I don't want to be taken in by it. I do see an advantage of the glasses when I want to look at a model especially in a 3D setting I can stand up and look at it from above and change the angle without having to fiddle around with the mouse. However, I would prefer the desktop but I'm conservative, I'm familiar with the desktop. 
 
 
Last question, any other comments?
I find that the 3D view gives me a better understanding of my processes, I can visualize the workspaces (individual process instances) very well.
